Barium fluoride is widely used in infrared and ultraviolet windows, prism substrates, and other applications.
Barium fluoride crystals are commonly employed as scintillation crystals. However, due to their excellent transmittance range from 150 nm in the ultraviolet to 11 µm in the infrared, barium fluoride crystals are also used as optical components such as windows, lenses, and prisms for ultraviolet to infrared optics. Compared to calcium fluoride, barium fluoride exhibits poorer moisture resistance. Barium fluoride (BaF₂) crystals feature high mechanical strength and good moisture resistance (with a service temperature of up to 500°C in atmospheric conditions and 800°C in vacuum or dry environments). Their refractive index remains relatively stable over a wide temperature range, making them an ideal window material for CO₂ lasers. They are also suitable for use in other optical components.
